Tootin' Pooches is a local multiplayer party-sports game for 2 to 8 players where teams of dogs fight over a tennis ball. Grab the ball, haul it to your goal, and score. The catch: the only way to move is by farting. Players charge up a fart to launch across the arena and slam into other dogs, sending the ball flying. It started as a 48-hour game jam entry and won first place.
After the jam, the team partnered with Limbitless Solutions, a nonprofit that builds 3D-printed bionic arms for children. We rebuilt the game's input to run on an Arduino EMG controller that reads muscle activation, so playing Tootin' Pooches became a way for kids to practice the exact muscle groups they need to operate their prosthetics. A game about farting dogs turned into physical therapy that doesn't feel like therapy. Tootin' Pooches was showcased at the Limbitless booth in the GDC Play area at GDC 2018.
